Most of the of the buildings of Oscar Niemeyer started out as sketches of the female body. From these sketches the architect would take one or two lines which he transformed into his buildings.
For his installation at Temple Gallery, Erik van der Weijde parts from this same idea and mixes his view on architecture and the (female) body. The portfolio ‘Senate, Brazil’ consists of 8 photographs of the Brazilian National Congress building in Brasilia, showing it from all sides, resembling the classic set-up of live nude drawing in art academy. The other images in the exhibition are photographs from his family, placed in presentation made especially for this exhibition. Courbe tries to create a dialogue between the inside and outside, the human flesh and cold concrete, the public and the private.
